A handsome late 19th-century French Napoleon III style ebonized bookcase, distinguished by its elegant proportions and unusually practical small scale. Measuring 82 inches high, 48½ inches wide and only 15½ inches deep, the bookcase provides excellent book storage while its relatively shallow depth makes it particularly well suited to a library, study, living room or home office.

The architectural ebonized case is detailed with a molded cornice, finely fluted frieze and paneled lower doors. The tall original glass doors provide an elegant view of the books within while helping to protect them from dust.

The warm wood interior provides a handsome contrast to the ebonized exterior and has been fitted with five new oak shelves. Fully adjustable, the shelves can be positioned to accommodate books of varying heights, from smaller volumes to larger art and reference books.

The bookcase has been lightly restored, with care taken to preserve the subtle wear, surface variations and vintage patina that give the piece its character. An elegant and highly functional French bookcase combining the distinctive presence of the Napoleon III aesthetic with dimensions particularly well suited to contemporary interiors.
